Introduction

If your home has a hot-water return pipe, a recirculation pump on that line moves water that has cooled in the hot pipes back toward the water heater, so hot water reaches the tap sooner. This review considers these pumps for dedicated-return installations. If your home has no return pipe, read our guide to recirculation systems for homes without a return line; for how the two layouts differ, see our comparison of a dedicated return and an under-sink bypass.

This is a documentation comparison, not a hands-on test, and it does not rank the three pumps. Everything below comes from the manufacturersโ€™ own sheets, manuals and catalogs, and statements are theirs; where a maker is silent on something, we say so rather than guess. These are pumps, not complete kits, so each entry separates the parts that are required, recommended or optional.

โœ๏ธ Our Take

Three questions sort these pumps. What controls does each include: temperature sensing (the Grundfos), a 24-hour timer (the Taco) or no timer or temperature control (the Xylem)? What do you need to buy besides the pump, as listed in each entry? And what does each maker document for your water heater? Grundfos documents tank-type heaters and sets conditions for tankless use; for Taco and Xylem, the documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility.

Full Reviews: Three Pumps

Each entry gives the controls included, the makerโ€™s documented limits and the parts to plan for. The buying guide summarizes the checks that apply to all three.

1. Grundfos COMFORT 10-16 TA BU/LC (98420224)

Controls included: temperature sensing with a learning function, and an external sensor on the hot supply pipe.

The COMFORT 10-16 TA is a plug-in circulator that Grundfos designs for a dedicated return line. Grundfos says the pump starts when its sensor sees the water cool and stops when it warms, and that in its โ€œtemperature+โ€ mode a second sensor on the supply pipe lets it adjust its start and stop temperatures; with no water used for 24 hours it switches to a vacation mode. It has built-in shut-off and non-return valves, a 6-foot line cord and insulation shells, and Grundfos lists it at a maximum of 6 W. The connection is 1ยผ-inch NPSM. Grundfos also makes the T (temperature only) and TDT (digital timer plus temperature) versions; this entry covers the TA only.

Grundfos describes the COMFORT pumps as suited to small and middle-size private homes and lists a maximum flow of 2.2 gpm and 3.5 feet of head. House size alone does not select a pump: it has to suit the flow and resistance of your own loop. For tankless heaters, Grundfosโ€™s data booklet describes use as limited by higher pressure loss and a minimum start-flow requirement and says that case needs special attention in the design calculations; an earlier Grundfos sheet tells installers to consult the heater maker about flow and warranty requirements. That is not an approval for tankless use.

Key limits:

  • Heater: tank-type heaters are listed as suitable; tankless use needs the design checks above and your heater makerโ€™s requirements.
  • Sensor: the external sensor is listed as a component of the TA variants. Confirm it is in the exact offer before you buy.
  • Parts: required, fittings to suit your pipe (Grundfos sells union sets); recommended, balancing valves on branched systems; optional, a venting flange.
  • Drinking-water and operating limits: Grundfos states the pump is drinking-water approved with a lead-free housing. Follow Grundfosโ€™s instructions for the limits that apply to your installation.

Pros and Cons ▾ tap to expand

2. Taco Plumb nโ€™ Plug 006-B4-PNP

Controls included: a 24-hour analog timer with 15-minute steps. Optional: a separate clip-on aquastat.

The 006-B4-PNP is a bronze circulator with ยพ-inch sweat connections, a factory 6-foot line cord and the analog timer. Taco says the timer cycles the pump during peak-use periods such as early morning or early evening. It runs on 115 V (0.52 A), is for indoor use only, and Tacoโ€™s sheet shows an NSF mark reading NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 for the Plumb nโ€™ Plug family. Taco describes the pump for recirculation loops and sizes it by the total length of supply and return pipe. The documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility.

Tacoโ€™s sheet says the 005 and 006 models are designed for systems using 200 to 400 feet of ยพ-inch pipe. Pipe length is only one input: the pump must still suit your loopโ€™s flow and resistance (Taco lists 0 to 11.5 gpm and 0 to 9.5 feet of head for the 006). The optional aquastat is a separate Taco item (#563-2). Tacoโ€™s aquastat sheet gives its settings as on at 95ยฐF and off at 115ยฐF, says it clips onto ยพ-inch pipe or the pump casing, and says it controls pump operation to maintain system temperature in that range. That describes when the pump switches at the aquastat, not a guaranteed temperature at every fixture or throughout the loop.

Key limits:

  • Heater: the documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility. Confirm compatibility for your exact heater and installation with Taco and your heater maker.
  • Parts: required, no separately required parts are listed in Tacoโ€™s sheet (installation still needs a 115 V supply and must meet your heaterโ€™s instructions and local rules); recommended by Taco, isolation valves, pipe insulation and flow checks (this model has no integral flow check; other model codes do); optional, the clip-on aquastat.
  • Limits: follow Tacoโ€™s instructions for the operating and potable-water limits that apply to your installation.

Pros and Cons ▾ tap to expand

3. Xylem/Laing E1-BCTVNNNW-01 (60A0G1008)

Controls included: none. A speed knob adjusts the pumpโ€™s output.

No timer or temperature control is included. Whether you add an external control depends on your intended installation; ask Xylem or your installer. Plan for these parts, using Xylemโ€™s own wording for each category:

  • Required (Xylem manual, this housing style): a ยฝ-inch swing check valve after the pump, and fittings for the pumpโ€™s ยฝ-inch NPT threads.
  • Recommended by Xylem: a ball shut-off valve before the pump and a vertical air vent; extra shut-off valves on both sides if you want to service the pump without draining the system.
  • Optional: a timer or other control. Xylem sells a plug-in timer for its E-series pumps, but its manual says timers differ by voltage and by the pumpโ€™s production date, so confirm the right one with Xylem.
  • Required where your system, your heaterโ€™s instructions or local rules require it: thermal-expansion control. Xylemโ€™s manual warns about pressure from heated water and names compression tanks and relief valves; follow your heater makerโ€™s instructions.

The E1-BCTVNNNW-01 (part 60A0G1008) is a brass circulator with ยฝ-inch NPT threaded connections and an electronically commutated motor that Xylem lists at 10 to 28 W. Xylemโ€™s manual says the pump belongs in the recirculation line below the water level of the water heater, not pumping away from the heater or directly in the supply line, and specifies ยฝ-inch tubing for the recirculation line. Xylem says the E1 is designed for pipe loops (hot supply plus recirculation line) up to 250 feet, and that the pump must produce enough continuous flow, at a pressure sufficient to overcome friction losses in the supply and return piping. Length alone does not settle the choice.

Xylemโ€™s catalog calls the E series โ€œdesigned specifically for potable water applicationsโ€ with lead-free brass, and its manual limits the drinking-water classification to water up to 140ยฐF. The documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility.

Key limits:

  • Heater: the documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility. Confirm compatibility for your exact heater and installation with Xylem and your heater maker.
  • Limits: compare Xylemโ€™s drinking-water temperature limit with your heater setting, and follow Xylemโ€™s instructions for the limits that apply to your installation.

Xylem (Laing Thermotech)

A brass circulator with a speed knob and no included timer or temperature control, installed in the return line with a check valve and other parts bought separately.

Pros and Cons ▾ tap to expand

Buying Guide: The Checks That Apply to All Three

Return-line scope

This review considers these pumps for dedicated-return installations, and each maker documents that a little differently: Grundfos designs its pump for a dedicated return line, Xylemโ€™s manual describes installing the pump in the recirculation line, and Taco describes loops sized by supply and return pipe length without saying more. For homes without a return pipe, see our guide to systems for homes without a return line; our layout comparison explains the two layouts.

Water heater

Grundfos documents tank-type heaters and sets conditions for tankless heaters. For Taco and Xylem, the documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility. For every pump, check your heater makerโ€™s instructions and warranty terms for recirculation, and have a plumber confirm the layout if you are unsure. Our tankless vs tank water heater guide explains the heater types.

Controls

The Grundfos TA senses temperature and learns your use pattern, the Taco runs on a 24-hour timer (with an optional aquastat), and the Xylem includes no timer or temperature control. Which approach suits you depends on your installation and your heater makerโ€™s guidance; if you are unsure, ask the pump maker or your installer. Confirm the Grundfos sensor is in the exact offer.

Sizing

Floor area and pipe length are starting points only. The pump has to deliver enough flow against the resistance of your loop (pipe sizes, fittings, valves and the heater), so compare each makerโ€™s performance data with your layout, or have an installer check it.

Operating and potable-water limits

A pumpโ€™s mechanical limits are not always the same as its drinking-water rating. Xylemโ€™s manual limits its drinking-water classification to water up to 140ยฐF, and the NSF listing for Tacoโ€™s circulator family is for domestic hot-water contact tested at 140ยฐF. Follow each makerโ€™s instructions for the limits that apply to your installation, check the label on the pump you receive against your heater setting, and see our guide to checking and adjusting water heater temperature. Some heater makers also recommend thermostatic mixing valves at points of use and require expansion control for a recirculating loop; follow your heaterโ€™s instructions and local rules, and ask your installer or building department.

Parts: required, recommended and optional

Wide table: this table is wider than the page on small screens โ€” swipe or scroll it sideways to see every column โ†’

Pump Included, as documented Required Recommended Optional
Grundfos COMFORT 10-16 TA BU/LC Pump with built-in shut-off and non-return valves, 6-foot line cord, insulation shells; external sensor listed for TA variants Fittings to suit your pipe (1ยผ-inch NPSM connection; Grundfos sells union sets) Balancing valves on branched systems (Grundfos) Venting flange (Grundfos)
Taco Plumb nโ€™ Plug 006-B4-PNP Pump, 24-hour analog timer, factory 6-foot line cord No separately required parts are listed in Tacoโ€™s sheet; installation still needs a 115 V supply and must meet your heaterโ€™s instructions and local rules Isolation valves, flow check (this model has none), pipe insulation (Taco) Clip-on aquastat (Taco #563-2, separate item)
Xylem/Laing E1-BCTVNNNW-01 (60A0G1008) Pump with speed knob and cord. No timer or temperature control ยฝ-inch swing check valve after the pump; fittings for the ยฝ-inch NPT threads (Xylem manual) Ball shut-off valve before the pump; vertical air vent; extra shut-off valves if you want to service without draining (Xylem) Timer or other control, depending on your intended installation

Thermal-expansion control is separate from the lists above. It is required where your system, your heaterโ€™s instructions or local rules require it, and it applies to any of these pumps. Xylemโ€™s manual, for example, warns about pressure from heated water and names compression tanks and relief valves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use these pumps if my home has no return line?

This review considers them for dedicated-return installations. For homes without a return pipe, see our guide to systems for homes without a return line.

Q: How do I know a pump suits my water heater?

Start with the pump makerโ€™s statement (see the table), then your heater makerโ€™s instructions for recirculation and warranty. Where the documents reviewed do not specify heater-type compatibility, confirm with the maker and have a plumber check the layout.

Q: Does the Xylem pump need a timer?

None is included, and whether you add one depends on your intended installation. Xylem sells a plug-in timer, so confirm the match with Xylem; the required, recommended and optional parts are listed in the parts table above.

Conclusion

The three pumps differ mainly in the controls they include and in what you add. The Grundfos COMFORT 10-16 TA includes temperature sensing and documents tank-type heaters, with conditions for tankless. The Taco Plumb nโ€™ Plug 006-B4-PNP includes a 24-hour timer and leaves the valves to you. The Xylem E1-BCTVNNNW-01 includes no timer or temperature control and has the longest list of parts to buy.

Before buying, check the makerโ€™s instructions for your heater, the limits that apply to your installation, what is in the exact offer, and the parts you will need to add. If your problem is not a long wait but no hot water at all, see our no-hot-water guide.
